Division of English for Specific Purposes (ESP)

Division of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) was founded in 1996 and its academic courses have been conducted at VNU’s University of Languages and International Studies since 1997.

The Division is currently in charge of the following 3-credit courses:

  1. Methodology in Teaching English for Specific Purposes
  2. English for Economics
  3. English for Finance and Banking
  4. English for Tourism
  5. English for Business Communication

The course of Methodology in Teaching English for Specific Purposes is taught in English Language Teaching program whose annual number of graduates assigned to other universities and non-English specialized institutions is remarkably high. The integration of this course into the training program serves to equip students with the methodology in teaching specialized courses in English as well as to satisfy the needs of society.

The other four subjects are taught to students majoring in Translation & Interpreting and students of Economics-oriented program (code 721).

The course of English for Business Communication is designed to equip students with speaking skills (presenting, making and receiving a phone call) and writing skills (types of correspondences, reports and proposals) in order to meet the requirements of domestic and foreign companies and agencies.

English for Economics, English for Finance and Banking, English for Tourism are designed for students in Translation and Interpreting major in order to provide them with necessary background knowledge and technical terms to better meet the requirement of their future job as interpreters and translators. These courses are taught to students in economics-oriented program to provide them with a source of technical terms.

All courses are designed in a way that equips students with essential knowledge and skills to meet the demands of the 21st century: robust professional qualifications, profound background knowledge, high communicative English proficiency in different professional areas, logical thinking and critical thinking, teamwork skill, and high adaptability to work in domestic and international environment.

All lecturers of this Division have got a Master Degree either in English Studies or in Teaching Methodology. Some of them are doing their PhD in Vietnam or abroad. They all have an additional Bachelor degree in Economics or a Master degree in Business Administration.
