Division of English 1, with nearly 30 staff, is the first working unit to provide introductory English courses for FELTE freshmen. With well-qualified, experienced, enthusiastic and friendly teachers, English 1 has offerred students a challenging yet dynamic learning environment. The academic curriculum in English 1 consists of the following subjects: Academic English, Social English and English for Economics. Students majoring in teacher-training and translation are required to attend Social English and Academic English courses while double-majored students are required to attend Academic English and English for Economics, equivalent to 8 credits per semester. All the course contents are integrated with four language skills of listening – speaking – reading – writing in order to help students achieve B2 level of Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) by the end of their first semester, which is equivalent to level 4/6 in Vietnam’s 6-level of foreign language proficiency framework.
Diversified and interesting learning and extra-curriculum activities in Division of English 1 have assisted students to improve not only their English proficiency but also a number of soft skills such as critical thinking, team-work, information-searching, and self-study skills. The most outstanding activities include Bookworm Project, Global Citizens Project, Start-up Business Plan Project, U-Lead event to welcome Vietnamese Teachers’ Day, Learning Fest to review an academic year, etc. The curriculum has been highly appreciated by students and it was approved at university level in the academic year of 2015- 2016.
