WORKSHOP: COMMUNICATIVE APPROACH TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES
Training by doing: Communicative approach to English language teaching for specific purposes
What is this?
This is a practical, step-to-step workshop that aims to train teachers to use the communicative approach to:
- design an ESP course syllabus;
- prepare ESP course materials, learning tasks, and assessment tasks; and
- deliver/observe and get/give critical feedback on teaching practices in an ESP class.
What does this course include?
Three major areas focused on during the training courses are:
- Approaches to English language teaching, and the communicative approach to ESP: From theory to practice
- Developing paper-based and Internet-based materials and tasks for a communicative ESP classroom
- Assessment in ESP: traditional vs. communicative approach
What are the training methods?
The training is flexible with both theory and practice, located in both training rooms and real ESP classrooms.
Participants can expect to:
- listen, take notes and exchange ideas with other participants and the trainers (for around 30% of the time);
- practice with authentic tasks in the training rooms (for around 40% of the time); and
- deliver/observe and get/give critical feedback on their own/their peers’ teaching practices in a real ESP class (for around 40% of the time).
Who are the trainers?
The 03 core trainers are experienced in ELT or ESP at the Faculty of English language teacher education (ULIS, VNU).
- Vu Hai Ha (Faculty Dean, major: English language teaching methodology)
- Nguyen Thi Thanh Van (Head of ESP Division, major: ELT and ESP)
- Nguyen Thuy Phuong Lan (Senior lecturer, ESP Division, one of the authors of the national Tieng Anh textbooks for school students in Vietnam)
When and where are the sessions held?
There is ONE face-to-face session per month from March, 2018 to October, 2018. These sessions are held at 207B2, Faculty of English language teacher education (ULIS, VNU). The specific timing will be agreed on during the first meeting as so to fit the schedules of as many participants as possible.
Each session is followed by online exchanges via email.
Who can apply?
Any lecturer/teacher inside or outside the University of Languages and International Studies, VNU can register and become a participant, as long as he or she:
- Has some English language teaching experience in the field of ESP, OR: is strongly interested in this area;
- Can participate in the training sessions with strong commitments (e.g. attending ALL the training sessions, attending the classroom observations, delivering classroom contents in the real ESP class if required); and
- Is willing to pay a small fee for photocopying, tea breaks, and training materials. Note that the trainers are working on a voluntary basis and expect no payment.

- To ensure the best quality and management, we only expect a small group of participants from 05-10 participants. In case the number of participants exceeds this expectation and hence we must shortlist the number of participants, we would appreciate if you could answer these following questions in your registration email:
- Why are you interested in this training course (or: How is this course relevant to you?)
- How strong are your commitments? (e.g. Can you attend ALL the training sessions, attend the classroom observations, deliver classroom contents in the real ESP class if required); and
- Are you willing to pay a small fee for photocopying, tea breaks, and training materials? If yes, how much is an acceptable fee for you for each session?
Registration closes on 9.00 AM Friday, March 2, 2018.
