Brief introduction:

The name of the Faculty has changed almost as much as that of the university:

  • In 1958, FELTE’s initial name was English Division, part of the Faculty of Foreign Languages in Hanoi National University of Education.
  • In 1967, the English Division became English Department under the Hanoi National University of Foreign Language Teacher Education.
  • In 1993, the English Department was renamed Department of Anglo-American Language and Culture under College of Foreign Languages (CFL), a member of Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU).
  • In 2009, the name was again changed to Faculty of English Language Teacher Education (FELTE) under the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS), VNU.

Founded in 1958, the Faculty of English Language Teacher Education (FELTE) is one of the oldest English language training institutions in Vietnam. Having begun with a staff of only four lecturers and an initial enrollment of only nine students when it was first known as English Division of the Department of Foreign Languages, Hanoi National University of Education, the Faculty has since undergone many important milestones of development. In 1967, the English Division became one of the four founding departments of the Hanoi National University of Foreign Language Teacher Education. And in 1993, with the advent of Vietnam National University, the name morphed into the Department of Anglo-American Language and Culture. In 2009, however, it was again renamed the Faculty of English Language Teacher Education and the name remains to date.

Achievements:

Over the course of nearly 60 years, the Faculty has gradually established for itself a nationwide reputation for innovative research and excellence in teaching and has always accorded significant attention to this end. Besides, it is also keen on providing students with a dynamic and friendly learning environment.

In recent years, FELTE has trained dozens of thousands of undergraduates and postgraduates majoring in English Language Teaching, Translation, Linguistics and Cultural Studies of English-speaking countries. The Faculty is the main contributor of language teachers to primary, secondary, tertiary levels of education. It also provides quality human resources for professional and vocational institutions and the armed forces and helps to meet the growing demand for foreign languages in various fields ranging from diplomatic relations and economy to socio-politics and defense.

FELTE also plays an important role in developing the National School-level English Curriculum, and composing the new English textbooks, particularly the curriculum and textbooks for lower and upper secondary in 2002 and 2011. From 2002 to date, the Faculty has worked with the Ministry of Education and Training to devise an English teacher training program for primary and upper secondary schools. Besides, it has also helped to prepare the curricula for postgraduate, in-service, double degree courses as well as professional development (PD) programs for primary and secondary school teachers.

For its substantial contribution, FELTE has been given many prestigious awards by the Party and the Government, the Ministry of Education and Training and Vietnam National University, Hanoi. For example, it won the Third Level Labor Medal in 1993, Second Level Labor Medal in 2001 and First Level Labor Medal in 2008, and has also received Certificates of Merits from the Prime Minister, Minister of Education and Training, Provincial People’s Committees, President of VNU and President of the University of Languages and International Studies for individual and collective contribution.
